In early August, Grand Valley Power announced the election results of the 2021 Board of Directors election and welcomed a new face to the team, Brian Woods.
Brian was inspired to petition for a seat on GVP’s board because of his commitment and passion to serve the Western Slope community. “I recognized an opportunity to positively support Grand Valley Power and their values. As a newly elected director, I strive to keep the cooperative's mission in mind – providing a safe, affordable, and reliable source of electricity to all co-op members. I consider it a privilege to have been selected to represent the constituents of GVP and look forward to the journey ahead,” Woods stated.
Woods first began working in the construction field and then as an underground miner for ten years. For the next 29 years to retirement, he worked in the utility service field at Clifton Sanitation District (wastewater) first as an operator and then as the general manager for 15 years. During this time, he earned a degree in Environmental Restoration Engineering at Mesa State College.
Brian is a fourth-generation Western Colorado native, initially growing up in the small town of Uravan, Colorado before relocating to Grand Junction. In 1980, Brian graduated from Central High School where he later met his wife, Vicki. In 1985, Brian and Vicki were married and have raised their two children, Corey, and Jennifer, in the Grand Valley. Outside of working and serving his community, Brian enjoys adventuring in the great outdoors, traveling, and spending time with friends and family.

I was born in Glenwood Springs, CO. Grew up in a coal mining and ranching family. I graduated from Mesa State (CMU) with a Bachelors's in Marketing and Management. I attended the World Wide College of Auctioneering and have an MBA from the University of Phoenix. I worked as the External Affairs Manager for Ute Water for 15 years and the Director of External Affairs for the Grand Junction Regional Airport for two years. Life is way too short, so I recently followed my heart and my western heritage and focused on my horse-drawn carriage business. I first became interested in serving on the GVP during my time at Ute Water. I have always had a great deal of respect and pride for the employees and the organization's involvement in the community. Serving on the Board has given me the opportunity to expand my knowledge in an industry I knew nothing about. I'm very proud of the community that we live in and as a result, I am involved in numerous boards, committees, and charities. My personal time is often spent working horses, in the mountains, traveling (domestic/international), and/or with my family. The most rewarding thing I have ever done was become a Foster Parent. If you ever want to make a difference in this world, do it through the eyes and heart of a child.

5 years on board, I think.
I see the rural electric board as an opportunity to continue to bridge the rural and urban gap.
My family and I are 4th and 5th generation food producers. We ranch in Mesa County. We sell ground beef directly to consumers locally and we also send many of our calves into the food supply chain that includes food service and grocery stores. We ensure an abundance of care for the land, livestock, and our community.
I have a BS in Agriculture Education from CSU. (Go Rams) I worked big box retail management for nearly 20 years, including Mervyns and I opened the Barnes & Noble store in GJ as the Store Manager. I owned Nick-N-Willy's Pizza on Horizon Drive for 10 years and 3 weeks.
Howard and I worked off farm jobs for 35 years to reach our goal that was set when we were 18 years old of working together on the ranch. We work together on a daily basis. Our son and his wife have now joined the family business.
Any time not spent directly on the ranch is filled with advocating for our community and for agriculture. I have been on the CO Cattlemen's Association board for 10 years. I just completed a term as President of Cattlemen's. I have been on the GJ Chamber of Commerce Board for the last 7 years. Other community service includes WCCC Ag Advisory Board, Mesa County 4-H Foundation Board. VanWinkle Ranch contributes a cow or two every year to local non-profit organizations, including the Salvation Army and HOPE of the Grand Valley to help ensure food security for some of our community that struggles.
I am a bit of a pizza snob. Always looking for the best pizza. Crust has to be juuuuust right and the sauce needs to have just a tiny bit of a bite to it. I like traditional toppings.
I was honored to share the Denver Business Journal 2021 Who's Who in Agriculture Trail Blazer Award with my sister. I was nominated for the award by Grand Junction Economic Partnership (GJEP)
